Yesterday I was invited on the unhooked podcast with men’s coach, speaker and my good friend, Jeremy Lipkowitz, and one of the main themes of our conversation was about what happens when you realise that the path you’ve taken won’t lead to the confidence, freedom and fulfilment you seek.
When you get stuck on the wrong mountain.
Whatever journey you’re on in life, there is no greater trap than thinking that reaching a particular goal will change your life. Because the only thing that truly impacts your life — and the people in it — is who you become in the pursuit of it.
Here’s why -
You may reach the top of the proverbial mountain, but if it comes at the cost of your authenticity, relationships or health, then you may find that reaching the top won’t offer the ‘success’ you hoped for.
For it’s in these moments that we must pause and reassess not just our goals, but the paths we choose to achieve them. Which is exactly what I’ve come to realise over the last few weeks.
Since the end of last year, I’ve felt this growing resistance to how my business operated. I had begun to notice that I was spending the majority of my time teaching, preaching, and guiding people to live a fully-lived life, but because of this, it was becoming harder for me to live my own fully-lived life.
And the last thing that I want is to become just another keyboard guru. So it took getting radically honest with myself and asking — Where do I make the most impact? Where do I get the best results? Where do I experience the most fulfilment? What brings me the most energy and joy? But most importantly, where in my business do I currently lack these things?
And after asking myself these questions, it became clear that the way I was running my business no longer serves me in this season of my life. I know that I’m on the right mountain, but I’ve taken the wrong path.
A path that, day by day, is disconnecting me from the freedom and aliveness that I wish to experience in my day-to-day life.
And so, to protect my time, energy and freedom to pursue the things that matter to me outside of my work, I’ve made two major choices.
The first being to close the doors for my group program, From The Core, for the foreseeable future.
As much as I have been privileged to have shared a container with some amazing people and to hear their stories of leadership, love, hardship and healing over the years — it does take a lot of my own capacity to hold space for so many people at once.
So, I’ve decided to step down from group coaching and focus exclusively on private mentorships, where I feel — at my core — that I make the most impact, where I get the best results and feel the greatest sense of fulfilment. It simply is my zone of genius.
The second big change that I’m going to be making is with how I create, educate and inspire through my content on Instagram — something that has been at the bottom of my list for a while now.
I’m constantly teaching about life and leadership, yet I’ve come to realise that it’s through the usual grind of producing, sharing, and teaching that I’ve inadvertently stepped back from the very essence of what I preach. And at my core, I feel as though this is life’s way of inviting me to step down from the pedestal — teaching about life and leadership — to instead, step back into the trenches to dive deep into the experiences that shape us. To inspire through my actions and lived experiences rather than my words.
To step out of the cycle of constant content creation and, instead, live the very essence of the teachings I share — the raw, unfiltered experience of a fully-lived life.
Including taking you, on my mission to evolve from rookie runner to a 100KM trail athlete alongside my adventures in (South) Africa — sharing the insights on life, love, performance and leadership that I learn along the way.
While I’m not stepping away from creating, I am redefining the game.
So my Instagram will change, and so will my newsletter, the Unbound Leader. I’m going to be moving the release from bi-weekly to weekly, with an emphasis on being more personal and short-form than the previous editions.
This means that you can expect a brand-new, easily digestible and thought-provoking newsletter every Saturday at 10 AM GMT +1:00.
If this new direction doesn’t align with you, it’s okay to part ways. But if you’re staying, I’m grateful for your support and excited to have you with me on this journey.
Thank you and let’s make 2024 one for the books.
